June 1, 2009 - KCRG-TV gives Erin's story top billing as the lead story on the 5:30 and 10:00 newscasts.
Family Still Searching for Teen 8 Years Later
CEDAR RAPIDS – Eight years of unanswered questions have haunted the Pospisil family. But, they refuse to give up. On June 3, 2001, Cedar Rapids teenager Erin Pospisil vanished after she said she was going to a friend's house to watch movies. Jim Pospisil keeps one thing in mind as he inflates dozens of balloons for his missing daughter.
"There's always hope. They've found people up to twenty years later...even more,” he said.
The Pospisil family has now moved to Nebraska. They come back to Cedar Rapids every year to release balloons to mark the date 15-year-old Erin Pospisil vanished. Despite the move, Erin's step-mother says she'll never change her cell phone number. Erin has it memorized.
"You think, every year, this will get easier. Every year, Christmas will get easier or birthdays will get easier. This day will get easier. It doesn't,” Carolyn Pospisil said, "The day that I don't have hope she's out there, I don't know how I'll get out of bed."
The Pospisils attach a photo of Erin to every balloon, hoping someone will recognize her.
"You don't know where they're going, but we don't know where she went, either,” Carolyn Pospisil said.
Jim Pospisil said, "I hope she's out there somewhere."
In the past, balloons have landed in Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio.
"I have to think, today's the day we'll find her. If not today, then tomorrow,” Carolyn Pospisil said.
No matter how long it takes, the family insists they'll never stop searching until Erin comes home.
